Writing Ourselves into the Story: Torah-Poetry Discussion and Workshop

A new Torah study with Nefesh, presented by Leila Bilick

February 11, 2021 @ 7:00 pm 8:15 pm PST

This class will bring us into conversation with some of the better-known Torah stories, like the one about Lot’s wife who was turned into a pillar of salt. To understand the way others have interpreted these stories, we will turn to both rabbinic commentary and contemporary poetry that reference or reimagine these stories. And just as these rabbis and poets have inevitably filtered these stories through their own experience, we too will approach these stories as inherited material that is ours to interpret by writing our own poems each week. In the words of Wallace Stevens in The Idea of Order at Key West: “And when she sang, the sea,/
Whatever self it had, became the self/
That was her song, for she was the maker.”

The class is open to all. No poetry writing or Torah learning experience required!
