SUMMARY:Elul Spiritual Challenge 5786
DESCRIPTION:This Elul\, join Rabbi Susan Goldberg for 4 weeks of self-guided\, spiritual preparation for the upcoming High Holy Days.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up for Elul Spiritual Challenge\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the month of Elul\, which precedes Rosh Hashanah\, we have the opportunity to prepare for the meaningful experiences and possibilities of the High Holy Days. Our tradition asks us to engage in a cheshbon hanefesh\, an accounting of our souls. There are many ways to do so. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a special week by week series of video teachings and preparation practices\, The Elul Spiritual Challenge. We will begin on August 16th.  \n\n\n\nThis year’s focus of our practice is Showing Up (Zerizut). Zerizut means enthusiasm\, alacrity\, timeliness\, prompt willingness. The distillation of it is “showing up.” Let’s spend a month focusing on how we show up\, how we show up for ourselves\, for our beloveds\, for our community\, and for the world as a way to prepare for the year ahead\, and what will hopefully be a year full of showing up-ness in all the different ways. \n\n\n\nYou are encouraged to support your practice in chevruta/study/practice partnerships. You can opt to be paired with someone when you sign up OR enter the challenge with a partner of your choosing. Or choose to do it solo. \n\n\n\nWe will also have an optional zoom session with Rabbi Susan in the middle of the month to share how it is going and to ask any questions. All the details below:  \n\n\n\nSchedule: \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 16 — First ESC video released to students via email \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 23 — Second ESC video released to students via email \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 27 at 5pm — Optional Zoom Gathering for ESC students \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 30 — Third ESC video released to students via email \n\n\n\nSunday\, September 6 — Fourth ESC video released to students via email  \n\n\n\nPrice: \n\n\n\nSliding scale $36-54. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \n\n\n\n*This year\, the month of Elul (the final month of the Jewish calendar\, year 5786) is from sundown on August 13th to Erev Rosh Hashanah on September 11th.

SUMMARY:Ruth Beaglehole: A Compassionate Guide to Parenting with Nonviolence
DESCRIPTION:RSVP for A Compassionate Guide to Parenting with Nonviolence\n\n\n\n\nMore than a year after Ruth’s passing\, we are grateful that a group of nonviolent parenting educators has been able to bring into the world a project that was so close to her heart: her guide\, A Compassionate Guide to Parenting with Nonviolence\, created by Ruth Beaglehole with Kim Pesenti. \n\n\n\nOn Ruth’s birthday\, we’ll gather to celebrate Ruth\, her life\, her work\, and this beautiful gift she left for all of us. \n\n\n\nFor those joining us in person\, we’ll celebrate potluck-style\, sharing food and community together as we honor Ruth and welcome her guide into the world. For those who can’t be there in person\, we’ll also have a Zoom option so you can join us from wherever you are. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP below\, and indicate whether you’ll be attending in person or via Zoom. Your RSVP will help us know how many people to expect and make sure we have the appropriate space. Zoom information and additional event details will also be shared with registered guests in advance of August 30. \n\n\n\nFor those who would like to stay afterward\, a Nonviolent Communication Workshop led by Nefesh Kin Kathy Simon will follow from 1–4pm in the same space in The Commons. Separate RSVP is required for that\, please register for the Workshop here. \n\n\n\nPlease join us if you can. We’re really looking forward to gathering with old and new friends\, reconnecting\, celebrating Ruth’s birthday\, and sharing something she worked so lovingly to bring into the world. \n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, August 30\, 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 11:30am – 1:30pm PST \n\n\n\nLocation: The Commons (840 Echo Park Ave.\, Los Angeles CA 90026) and on Zoom (Link will be sent in advance of August 30)

SUMMARY:Showing Up for Hard Conversations with Kathy Simon
DESCRIPTION:Register for Showing Up for Hard Conversations\n\n\n\n\nApproaching potentially hard conversations with zerizut (energy\, alacrity\, readiness) \n\n\n\nIs there a conversation in your life that you are avoiding? Or a conversation you have had\, maybe more than once\, but it doesn’t go well? Elul is the perfect time to gain new skills\, and when possible\, to show up to try to repair disconnections and to start the new year fresh. The middah of zerizut\, Nefesh’s focus for this High Holy Days\, also comes to say: let’s get to it\, let’s do it\, let’s hasten to show up. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we’ll learn new skills for showing up with zerizut for potentially hard conversations. Drawing from the teachings of Nonviolent Communication\, the workshop will offer support for finding new avenues to approach potentially difficult conversations\, including both large and small group work and time for private reflection. \n\n\n\nBecause so many of us have enjoyed her teaching over the years\, we’ve invited Kathy Simon\, Nefesh Kin from Oakland\, to be back with us. Please sign up with zerizut and to embody zerizut— we think you’ll be engaged\, invigorated\, and feel more resourced as we approach the new year. \n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, August 30\, 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 1pm – 4pm \n\n\n\nLocation: The Commons (840 Echo Park Ave.\, Los Angeles CA 90026)

SUMMARY:Nefesh Shabbat Community Dinners
DESCRIPTION:SHABBAT COMMUNITY DINNERS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS\n\n\n\n\nSign up to be a guest\n\n\n\n\nWhen a month has a fifth Friday\, we have a special night of Shabbat Community Dinners to deepen connections at Nefesh. It is a great opportunity for Nefesh Kin to host a Shabbat gathering with community members in your homes. Often\, newcomers to Nefesh find that attending these intimate gatherings is a less overwhelming way to get to know other community members than attending a Shabbat service. Or\, you might be a Nefesh veteran who wants to get better acquainted with people you see at every Shabbat service.   \n\n\n\nThe following are some frequently asked questions we’ve gotten about hosting a Shabbat Community Dinner. We hope this information will encourage you to host one of your own!  As always\, please feel free to reach out to Shelley Levine\, our Shabbat dinner coordinator\, at communitydinners@nefeshla.org.   \n\n\n\nThank you so much for making this meaningful offering for our community! \n\n\n\nHow do I go about hosting a dinner? Where do I sign up to host? \n\n\n\nYou can sign up to host a dinner HERE. All of the dates for the duration of the year are listed; you can sign up for just one date or as many as you like. \n\n\n\nWho do I invite to my dinner? What if I’m not comfortable with a lot of new people coming to my house? \n\n\n\nA great way to make the dinner enjoyable for you is to plan on inviting some guests of your own\, Nefesh-adjacent or otherwise. Then\, leave 1-4 seats at your table (or more\, as you’re comfortable with) for guests to sign up. These folks are really excited to join you. \n\n\n\nCan I offer my dinner to a particular affinity group\, such as a Young Families Shabbat or Queer Shabbat? \n\n\n\nYes! If you’d like to get a specific group of folks together\, just indicate this on the form when you sign up to host. This is a great way to meet folks with similar interests! \n\n\n\nAm I supposed to prepare the dinner myself?  \n\n\n\nIf you love cooking\, by all means\, feel free to cook the meal yourself! Alternatively\, if this feels like a burden\, you can opt to have the dinner be a potluck and communicate with your guests in advance of the dinner exactly what you’d like them to bring. \n\n\n\nIs there something specific I’m supposed to serve at Shabbat dinner? \n\n\n\nWhile you may have eaten a traditional Shabbat dinner of roast chicken\, you have free rein to choose whatever you’d like to serve. We typically encourage pescatarian or vegetarian meals\, but you are not limited to what you choose to offer. Be creative – maybe it’s a “Make Your Own Sushi Shabbat” or “Shabbat Pizza Party”. Endless possibilities! \n\n\n\nDoes the dinner I serve have to be kosher? \n\n\n\nNo\, you are not obligated to serve a kosher meal; however\, please be sensitive to the needs of your guests who do observe kosher dietary laws. If you have any questions about what is appropriate\, please reach out to Ellen for guidance. \n\n\n\nWhat if my guests are allergic to my pet? What if they have accessibility needs or food restrictions? \n\n\n\nEvery guest is asked to list any allergies to food or otherwise when they sign up\, and also to disclose what their food restrictions are. If you have a guest who is vegan\, you are not expected to prepare a fully vegan meal. Just be sure to have a couple of things on the menu that each guest can enjoy. Accessibility issues should please be named on your host sign up so that we can best accommodate both you and your guests. \n\n\n\nThis all sounds like fun\, but the thought of making dinner for a huge group of people sounds expensive! \n\n\n\nWe get it. In order to offset the costs\, Nefesh will reimburse you $10/guest after your dinner has occurred. Each guest makes a contribution before they attend\, and we’ve found that this offering also means fewer last-minute cancellations. \n\n\n\nDo I have to do all the traditional prayers? \n\n\n\nOnly if you want to. Many hosts light candles\, bless the wine and challah\, and offer a moment of reflection or gratitude. Feel free to adapt the rituals to your community’s vibe. \n\n\n\nI live in a small space—can I still host?Yes! Shabbat is about the spirit\, not the size. Guests can sit on cushions\, share plates\, or gather around a coffee table. Coziness creates connection. \n\n\n\nCan I co-host with a friend?Absolutely. Teaming up makes hosting easier and more fun. One person can cook while the other sets the vibe or leads the blessings.
