Sonya was born on Tovangaar land in Orange County CA and grew up in Claremont CA. She has committed her life to building community with neighbors, friends, and family through organizing and building solidarity outside the harmful systems we are all born into and forced to perpetuate. She is also a professional dog walker and pet sitter, and originally came to one of Nefesh’s first High Holiday services through an invite from one of her dog walking clients!
Web & Social Media
Sonya Mendoza is a community organizer, professional dog walker and pet sitter, and messaging maven for a few different neighborhood organizing groups in Los Angeles. She came to Nefesh through her various connections in the Jewish organizing world. She handles designs, web site front and backend, and social media accounts for Nefesh, Never Again LA, and the Koreatown Popular Assembly.
Sonya currently does social media and messaging for the LA chapter of Never Again, a single issue Jewish group that seeks to end immigrant detention and deportation in the US, as well as the Koreatown Popular Assembly, a local organization that provides resources and rapid response to undocumented people in the Koreatown neighborhood of LA.
“It has been so fun to get to know the vibrant Nefesh community, which is currently based in my own neighborhood. As a multi-racial queer Jew, I love being in community with other Jewish folks who are excited and enthusiastic to build solidarity beyond borders, beyond prisons, and beyond the binaries that seek to divide and dehumanize us. I look forward to making many connections, both on social media and IRL to this incredible spiritual community that welcomes people from the margins so whole heartedly.”
